Chocolate and orange cake

I saw this recipe last week on a program called “My Cypriot kitchen”, retransmitted on the catalan TV. There were two things that immediately caught my attention: the impressive presenter, Tonia Buxton (a tall beautiful woman with bright blue eyes) and the interesting mixture of food cultures that the Cypriot kitchen presents, greek, cypriot and turkish, some of the best cooking around the world.

The chocolate, orange and nuts cake seemed very similar to the traditional greek “karidopita”. I couldn’t find the video program on the internet but I did find the recipe and decided to give it a try.

INGREDIENTS

For the cake:

  • 3 eggs
  • ½ glass caster sugar
  • ½ glass light olive oil
  • 1 glass milk
  • Brandy
  • 2 glasses plain flour (better if you put 1 + 1 glass wholemeal flour)
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 5 tbsp drinking chocolate
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 whole orange, blitzed in food processor (I peeled the orange, seemed weird to put the whole thing… but I also used the orange zest)
  • 1 glass coarsely chopped walnuts
For the syrop:
  • 1 glass water
  • ½ glass sugar
For Glaze:
  • 180g butter
  • 5 pouring tbsp condensed milk
  • 5 tbsp drinking chocolate
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
RESULT
The cake has an intense orange flavor, which depending on your taste can be good or bad, I would personally prefer it a bit less intense. I was a bit disappointed with the texture cause it looked really promising but the final result was dense and somehow wet and dry at the same time. However, I think there is none left in the fridge, and this is always a good sign🙂

    Gemma, jo unicament he vist aquest capitol i no he pogut resistir al pastis de cap manera! No se si has probat la “karidopita” (pastis de nous) grega, tambe la recomano!

  3. Natalia, no saps les hores que passo amb aquestes receptes americanes intentant mirar les conversions, quin cacao!! La veritat es que no recordo que he fet servir, diria que un got dels nostres, perque sino la recepta original diria “one cup”… o no! A experimentar!🙂
